What You Need For Your First Horse

Are you getting ready to get your first horse and you find yourself searching “what do I need for a horse?”. Look no more, here is what you need to get started. These are in no particular order.

  • Bridle/Headstall: You will need this to ride your horse. They have many options for different price ranges.

  • Bit or Hackamore: I use both bits and hackamores for my Horses. There are so many options out there. It is great to do some research with what you choose. Just keep in mind, light hands are the way to go.

  • Saddle: This is another one of those things that there are many different options for many different price ranges. The biggest thing is it needs to fit your horse properly.

  • Saddle pad: Saddle pads are fun. I would start out with one classic/neutral color. Then you can build your collection.

  • Girth/cinch: There are many different cinches out there. I currently am using a professionals choice one but I love a good mohair cinch.

  • Cooler: This is something you’ll need if you plan on working your horse in the colder months. It is important if they break a sweat that you get the moisture off of them.

  • Protective boots: Protective boots are great. I really try not to ride without them. I recommended boots instead of wraps as they are beginner friendly.

  • Lunge line and stick: You can get a lunge line at almost any tack or feed store. I love the Clinton Anderson handy stick for lunging.

  • Halter: I recommend getting a rope halter and or a leather halter.

  • Lead rope: Any lead rope will do.

  • Grooming kit: I will be doing a blog post soon on what should be in your grooming kit. But this is something that is very necessary.

  • First Aid Kit: I will also be doing a post soon on a first aid kit to have in your barn or trailer.

  • Tack cleaning kit: Saddle soap is a great and inexpensive option for cleaning your tack.

  • Helmet: If you are riding your new horse please consider wearing a helmet. I had a traumatic brain injury in the summer of 2020 and I value helmets for any contact or dangerous sport.

This should get you started. I can do a more in depth list if needed. I hope this helps you get some things you’ll need for your first horse. As an amazon affiliate I earn a commission through qualifying purchases.
